FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What's the difference between Test Your Best™ tutoring and the classes available from large test prep companies?
A: Unlike classes, the individual tutoring available from Test Your Best™ is designed to fit your needs and goals. Your tutor will select the books that suit you best and will meet you in the location of your choice at a time that fits your schedule. Every facet of our work together will be individually geared toward you. When your are busy with other responsibilities we can skip sessions or reduce your workload, and when you have more time to focus on test prep we can pick up the pace.

Q: What's the difference between Test Your Best™ tutoring and other tutors?
A: I do not work as a part-time tutor, and I am not bound by the confines of a large, faceless company. For the past 10 years I have dedicated myself to helping others raise their standardized test scores. My tutors and I have the latitude to develop a plan for each student based solely on his or her personal requirements, and the expertise to design such a plan without wasted hours. The tutors who work with me are dedicated, highly qualified individuals who have been carefully chosen as the best among a very large pool of candidates.

Q: How much does it cost to work with a Test Your Best tutor?
A: Because the economy is a major concern for most these days, many now choose to establish a budget at the outset.  If a student wants to set a maximum of 8 sessions, for example, we can structure a prep schedule that will allow for solid coverage of all relevant test areas. Of course, nothing is set in stone and if the student decides to increase or decrease the planned number of sessions we always strive to accomodate the student's needs. Keep in mind that although tutoring is more expensive than a class, Test Your Best students have a much greater chance of improving their scores than do students who spend a similar number of hours in a genericized test prep class.

Q: How can I learn more about how Test Your Best™ can help me?
A: Visit the About Test Your Best page, the Pre-College Testing page, or the any of the other links at the top of the page. Or, better yet, call me at (203) 803-9448.

Questions on ISEE/SSAT

Q: Can you help with the ISEE or SSAT?
A: The ISEE and SSAT are required tests for many students applying to private schools. Every fall we meet with many ISEE and SSAT students, usually working toward December or January tests. Relatively few other test prep companies or tutors have much experience with the ISEE or SSAT. Combined with the hectic schedules which are usually part of younger students' lives, preparing for these important tests can become very difficult. Fortunately, whether Lower, Middle, or Upper Level ISEE, or Lower or Upper Level SSAT, we can help!

Q: Will you come to my house for tutoring?
A: Our goal is to make your life as easy as possible, which means meeting where and when it is most convenient to you. Tutoring generally takes place in the student's home, although we sometimes meet at local libraries or other locations, allowing students from outside our usual service area to have the opportunity to work with us.

Q: How many hours of tutoring will be required to raise my score?
A: We are always able to work within budget constraints and we can esaily design a program to suit your needs. While other companies try to sell you large blocks of time which must be paid for in advance, it is impossible to determine how much time an individual needs without meeting with the student and assessing strengths and weaknesses. Most students we work with receive between 12 and 20 hours of tutoring.

Q: When should I start preparing for my test?
A: When to start preparing depends on your goals and your schedule. If finding several hours each week is an issue, you should start earlier. It is best if SAT students begin light prep work for the PSAT during the summer prior to Junior year. I've also held intensive week-long study sessions with students when a re-test is suddenly required or when they realize their other prep class or planning has been inadequate. While this is not ideal, I've seen dramatic results in such cases, and it is not uncommon for LSAT, GMAT, and GRE students.
